Severe thunderstorms are likely Saturday afternoon and evening. Tornadoes, heavy rainfall, dangerous lightning, large hail, and straight-line winds of 60 MPH are possible with these storms. Heavy rainfall may cause localized flooding issues in some communities.

The National Weather Service warns of widespread and damaging thunderstorms over all of Northeast Ohio containing large hail, heavy rainfall and damaging straight-line winds. Tornadoes are also possible with afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

A classic severe weather pattern is poised to set up over Northeast Ohio today increasing the threat of dangerous thunderstorms over Stark County communities for this afternoon and evening.

A warm front surging into Northeast Ohio will bring increasingly warmer and more humid air into the region this morning. This frontal system will be the fuel for dangerous thunderstorms over the region during the afternoon and evening hours. The storms that develop through today will have the potential to produce damaging straight-line winds exceeding 60 MPH, large hail, dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning, and extremely heavy rainfall.

The threat of tornado development is also possible with today’s storms.

With the ground already saturated from yesterday’s rain, localized flash flooding will threaten many communities especially those near streams and rivers. Rainfall with today’s thunderstorms could generate rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Rainwater rushing across roadways may make some roads impassable and drivers should be on the lookout for high water.

Stark County residents with outdoor activities today should keep a watchful eye on the weather and be prepared to seek shelter from dangerous lightning and/or tornadoes. Weather conditions can and do change quickly. Monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local news media outlets for possible weather advisories and warnings throughout the daytime hours.

High pressure currently influencing conditions will quickly move eastward and out of the region tonight allowing a complex of vigorous thunderstorms to approach and move in over Stark County by Wednesday morning.

A warm, humid air mass will move in over Northeast Ohio and collide with a low pressure system and set up prime conditions for some active weather. Conditions over the entire region will be nearly perfect for producing some very strong and sometimes severe thunderstorms over Stark County.

The Storm Prediction Center has already tagged the entire forecast area for a risk of severe thunderstorms.

Wednesday’s storms will also be slow movers, which could produce flooding issues in some areas around the county. Many areas around Stark County have seen some heavy rainfall from Monday’s thunderstorms and these areas will be prone to localized flooding problems from additional heavy rains.

Tomorrow’s storms could also produce damaging wind gusts.

With high pressure building in over the region Thursday, thunderstorms should move out of the region by morning or early afternoon. However, sunshine will result in some daytime heating and could again fire up some isolated thunderstorms.

Instability along with increased heat energy will set up conditions for the development of thunderstorms.
